Unlike vinyl records and other record styles, 78s are made from a unique and temperamental material called Bakelite. Bakelite has a tendency to warp easily, which is why 78s must be stored in their protective covers when not in use. But if your 78s ever do become warped, you may be able to straighten them out by yourself. The following trick would ruin a vinyl record, but it works wonders when restoring 78s to a flat, usable state.
Instructions
1. Check the weather report in advance of attempting this repair job. You'll need a warm, sunny day to make it work. Ideally, try this in the late morning on a clear day with a high between the mid-70s and mid-80s.
2. Lay a piece of heavy plate glass on a patio table, piece of outdoor furniture or even on your lawn. Place a warped 78 rpm record on top of the glass. Finally, cover the record with a second piece of heavy plate glass.
3. Allow the layers to set out in the sun for at least an hour. After that, check on the record every half hour by removing it from in between the pieces of glass and examining it closely. If you close one eye and hold the record at eye level, you should be able to see if it is still warped.
4. Leave the record in between the layers until it appears perfectly straight when checked. Place straightened records into protective covers and store them upright. Repeat the warming process as many times as necessary until all of your warped records have been straightened.
Tips Warnings
If you don't have a protective cover for your 78 rpm record, look at the online auction sites or inquire with used music stores in your area.
Bakelite is more resilient in high temperatures than vinyl. If you try this with a vinyl record, you'll just melt it.
Do not attempt this when the temperature is in the high 90s or hotter.
