Care For Oyster Plants

Oyster plant, or Moses-in-the-cradle (Rhoeo spathacea), is an herb, but it's not edible. In fact, the plant's sap is toxic. It causes skin irritation, pain in the mouth and abdominal cramps. Yet, this tropical perennial makes for a nice ornamental houseplant, or ground cover if you live in the right climate. Its bicolor lance-shaped leaves have a dark green upper surface with a purple underside. Oyster plant also has attractive pseudo flowers, called bracts, which are purple and cradle the small white -- and real -- blossoms. Under the right conditions, this plant requires simple care.

Instructions

1. Grow oyster plant outdoors only in USDA hardiness zones 9B through 11, subjecting it to a minimum winter temperature of no less than 25 degrees Fahrenheit. In other regions, raise it as an indoor potted plant.

2. Place oyster plants in any soil type -- sand, clay or loam -- in a site that offers any scale of sun or shade. Give outdoor plants 2 feet of space. Grow indoor plants in individual pots filled with all-purpose potting mix.

3. Amend clay and sand with 2 inches of compost or other organic matter to provide the oyster plant's roots a well-drained environment.

4. Irrigate oyster plants when the soil has dried to prevent root rot. Give outdoor plants 1 inch of moisture and water indoor plants until excess begins to drain out of the planter's holes.
