Fix Pella Shades That Are Sagging Between The Glass

Some Pella windows come with preinstalled shades between the glass panes of a double-pane window. Internal shades are convenient for homes with little ones, who have a tendency to tug on shades, but they can begin to sag and look unattractive between the panes. Sagging is often due to components in either the head or bottom rails not placing enough tension on the shade. These issues can be addressed by removing or replacing these components.

Instructions

1. Lift the shade into the open position.

2. Locate the latch releases on the left side of the window. There are typically two latches -- toward the top and bottom; some larger windows have more than two. Slide the top latch release down the channel until you feel it release. Pull the bottom latch release up the channel until it releases.

3. Pull on the wood window frame to open the panel and access the shades inside.

4. Tug on the plastic tab located in the top right corner of the shades with your fingers and pull it away from the window. Then slide the shade to the right to disengage the opposite end from its coupler. Pull the shade out.

5. Identify the friction clips pushed underneath each side of the cover on top of the head rail. These clips slide into position and add friction to keep the shade in place. Make sure the clips are firmly in place and not cracked or damaged. To replace the friction clip, pull the old clip out of place by hand. Then push the teeth of the new clip firmly under the head rail cover until it snaps into place.

6. Remove the bottom rail end caps from the shade. Look inside the bottom rail for the steel rods on either end then remove one rod at a time by hand. Each time a steel rod is removed, check the shade to see if the sagging has improved. Or check the shade to see if the sagging is corrected when both rods are removed from the bottom rail.

7. Push the end caps back onto the sides of the bottom rail.

8. Push the shade into the couplers inside the pane. Verify that the shade is no longer sagging when it is raised. Close the pane and pull the shade down. Verify that it is no longer sagging when closed. If sagging reoccurs, try removing an additional rod from the bottom rail.
