Instructions For Lacing Motorcycle Saddlebags

Saddlebags make it easy to transport gear by motorcycle.

Before mounting saddlebags to your motorcycle, most types must be properly laced. The lacing allows you to customize the fit of the saddlebags to your specific bike. A standard pair of saddlebags is mounted with a yoke that comes in two halves that are laced together so that the bags don't hang too close to the exhaust. As with any cycle accessory, make sure that the saddlebags are compatible with your type of bike before you buy.

Instructions

1. Measure the width of the bike's seat, then measure from just under the seat pad to the tops of the exhaust pipes. Add the numbers then subtract 1 to 2 inches.

2. Lay the two yoke halves so that they overlap with the lace holes aligned. Line up the halves so that the length matches your measurement. Place the unlaced yoke on the bike to make sure that the bags are at least 1 inch above the exhaust pipes. Lay flat again and make any adjustments necessary.

3. Thread the lace through the bottom two holes on one side of the pair of saddlebags. Pull each end through so that they're even in length. Take the right lace and pull through the next hole on the left side. Pull the left lace through the next hole of the right side, making an "X." Continue lacing in a criss-cross pattern until at least four yoke holes on each side have been laced. Repeat on the other side.

4. Tie the ends securely in a bow with a double knot, as if you were tying shoes. Cut off ends, if necessary.
