Luggage Restrictions At Alaska Airlines

Carefully review baggage guidelines prior to travel.

With over 75 years of service, Alaska Airlines carries over 17 million passengers per year to more than 60 cities within three countries. The airline has consistently received high ratings for outstanding customer satisfaction, including in-flight service and for the carrier's frequent flyer mileage program. In 1986 the holding company Alaska Air Group (Alaska Airlines is within this group) acquired Horizon Air -- a strong connection and frequent flyer program partner of Alaska Airlines. Thanks to this partnership, more flights and a seamless travel experience is offered, including clear and simple baggage guidelines.

Carry-On Baggage

One carry-on measuring 10"(h) x 17"(w) x 24"(l) and one personal item --- such as a purse, laptop or briefcase -- is allowed on Alaska and Horizon flights. Acceptance of carry-on baggage is based on cabin space availability; however, arrangements for bags to be gate-checked is offered free of charge.

Checked-Baggage

For tickets purchased on or after May 1, 2010, a $20 one-way charge for each of the first three bags applies. For tickets purchased prior to May 1, 2010, a one-way charge of $15 for the first bag and $25 for the second bag applies. Bags can weigh up to 50 lbs. and cannot exceed 62 linear inches. For flights operated by Alaska, bags must be checked in within 40 minutes of flight departure for domestic flights and within 60 minutes for international flights. For flights operated by Horizon Air, bags must be checked within 30 minutes of flight departure and 60 minutes for international travel. Please note, passengers traveling on Alaska Airlines from Atlanta, Denver and Las Vegas must check bags within 45 minutes of departure and within 90 minutes for flights from Guadalajara. Other special guidelines apply on Horizon flights from Burbank, Long Beach, Las Vegas, Oakland, Ontario, Portland, Palm Springs, Reno, San Diego, Seattle and San Jose.

Transporting Firearms

Passengers must be 18 years of age or older to transport firearms on board flights operated by Alaska Airlines. Handguns must be unloaded and packed in a hard-sided container locked with a key or lock combination in the passenger's possession only. Rifles, shotguns and other firearms must be unloaded and carried in a locked hard-sided container where only the passenger retains the key. These items may be included within your normal baggage allowance.
