Sick Honda lawn mower transmission

Hi. Hydrostatic transmission cable adjusted to max extent, but machine just crawls along. It does attempt to engage a higher speed just briefly now and then with a jerk. This machine is nearly 8 years old, but in good condition. The transmission is on the back axle and hidden away, so has never been looked at. Could it need oil or is it beyond repair? Wolf Sounds like the cable is not letting the valve move all the way in, if this is a fluid drive gear tranny like on a 3813, 3810, 4213, 3010, 3011 etc... Originally Posted by cheese Sounds like the cable is not letting the valve move all the way in, if this is a fluid drive gear tranny like on a 3813, 3810, 4213, 3010, 3011 etc... Cable seems ok and upper lever/arm moves ok. This is the European eqivilant of the HRB 216 with transmission part number (old) 20001-VE5-717 and superceded by 20011-VE5-710, and (latest) 20011-VE5-711. Can this be opened and freed, and or,can the oil be changed or at least topped up. Would this fix it? New one from Plano is $266 I'm not sure what is happening in it, but if you're game, tear into it and see what you can see. Are you certain that the input shaft is turning (nothing stripped causing slippage). Have you tried removing the cable from the lever and moving it manually to eliminate cable troubles? I've never had a problem with these trannies, so I haven't been into one to see how they're made. One last thing - what grade of oil do you suggest should I use to top it up? PS. I'm in Philadelphia all this week but when I get back to Ireland I'll have time to take a look. I don't know what oil it takes. I seem to remember they take 10w-30 oil, but please don't take my word for it. You might contact a honda dealer and ask. Hi cheese. I had a look when I got home. Took out the sump plug and only a dribble of oil came out. Found out it takes 140cc or 1/4 pint special Honda HST Oil ( no substitute) through the filler plate on top. There is a bleeding process which you must follow, which I did, and now it's like new. The top was coated in oily dirt, so I suspect the top oil seal is weeping but that fill should last a few years. After all it has been running on a couple of ounces of oil for the last year. Thanks again for your help, without which I may have just spent 400 Euros ($510) instead of 10 Euro ($12.75) Hope this helps somebody else. (My machine is similar to your HRB216) Just low on oil huh? That's good news. Sometimes the simple stuff is easy to forget. Hi wakyck: I have the same problem as you had with the same transmission. What is the bleeding process you referred to? Isn't the oil just added thru the filler hole? Thanks…. Originally Posted by kenac55 Hi wakyck: I have the same problem as you had with the same transmission. Have a good one. Geo Most of the time on hydros, the bleeding process is to get the wheels off the ground and run it forwards for 5 or 10 minutes, then backwards, then re-fill with oil if needed.
