Installing a pedestal sink
My husband and I are remolding our half bath. We have purchased a Glacier Bay Shelburne Pedestal Sink from HD. The instructions are for installing in either the studs or directly into the wall. The holes on the sink are only 8 inches apart so I am assuming we will use the wall mounting instructions. To mount the sink to the wall there are two toggle bolts. Will this keep the sink secure??? We have read about installing a 2x4 behind the wall but since the sink's instructions did not call for that we are unsure what to do. We think that the supply lines and electrical wiring is also right behind the wall. Any advice would be welcome. THANKS! Olivia Olivia, a good framing crew will install a 2x10 horizontally behind the area where a sink is to be installed. But often that is not the case. On a pedestal sink, ideally you want it fastened into a wall framing member, but the weight of the unit will be borne on the pedestal itself and the toggle bolts will just be there to stabilize it. If you have the option of opening up the wall where the sink will go, install a 2x8 or 2x10 across two or more studs, replace and finish your sheetrock. You will be better satisfied with the installation if you do. The toggle bolts will probably give good service, but I prefer solid attachment. If the stud spacing works out, sometimes the shape of the back of the sink will allow you to cut out a section of drywall and install a piece of 1/2 plywood between the studs. The plywood is then covered by the by the back of the sink when you attach it to the plywood. To produce a stronger support you can screw/glue another piece of wood to the back of the plywood, cut down to a length that allows it to fit behind the plywood and between the studs. One other thing to watch: pedestal sinks often require a non-standard height for their attachment to the drain plumbing in the wall behind them, and the plumber needs to know the required height, which will be listed in the sink manufacturer's installation instructions.
