About Wireless Laptops
Wireless laptops make it a breeze to stay connected. While you are traveling or away from home, a wireless laptop can go with you so you always have access to your email and information. The newer lightweight models fit easily into your briefcase---some are so compact they can fit into a small purse.
Identification
Wireless laptops can perform all of the basic functions of a desktop with the added bonus of mobility. Wireless laptops also contain many of the same components that desktops do, except that they are integrated into one, compact package. A flat screen, hard drive, Wi-Fi adapter, CD-Rom, USB ports, and a graphic card are all tightly grouped into a plastic casing and sold as a single unit. Although it can be added via a USB connection, a traditional mouse is not included. Instead, a touchpad is incorporated into the design of the keyboard, creating a convenient pointing device.
Types
Wireless laptops can be broken down into five different types: netbooks, luggables (which usually weigh about 30 pounds), ultraportable, thin and light, and desktop replacements. Desktop replacements are becoming increasingly popular with gamers, offering the same features and functionality of traditional desktops, except for the fact that they are steeply priced.
Size
Wireless laptop sizes are distinguished by their weight, width, depth, and thickness. The width usually refers to the length of the keyboard, and the depth is measured from the front of the keyboard up to where it meets the screen. The thickness of a wireless laptop is determined by its height, from bottom to top, when it is in the closed position. Weight is an important factor, and since wireless laptops are meant to be carried around, lighter weights are preferred. Manufacturers usually determine the weight of wireless laptops with the battery installed.
Benefits
Wireless laptops have one significant advantage over desktop units: portability. Access to the Internet can be accomplished anywhere that has an open Wi-Fi signal and an electrical outlet (if a backup power supply is necessary). And if you are using a wireless satellite card, connection to the World Wide Web is even more convenient.
Misconceptions
The word "wireless" can be a bit deceiving when it comes to its association with laptops. The term is not intended to signify that no wires exist in the laptop or there are none directly related to the unit itself. Instead, the term refers to connectivity technology. Bluetooth connectivity is possible for most laptops up to a range of approximately thirty-two feet. What this means is that any objects that are Bluetooth capable within thirty two feet can be accessed and utilized by the laptop. Wireless also refers to the ability to connect to Wi-Fi signals and access networks and the Internet without wires.
Warning
Because of the proprietary nature of some wireless laptop components, repairs can be costly. For this reason, you may wish to consider purchasing an extended warranty or service plan that will cover these costs, once the manufacturers warranty expires.
