Singapore Air Travel Luggage Information

Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines has consistently maintained a 5-star rating and has been one of Asia's leading airlines for many years. According to airlinequality.com, formerly Skytrax, Singapore Airlines remains one of the most modern, comfortable and luxurious airlines worldwide, not just in Asia.

In Cabin Baggage

Depending on the class of service you are traveling on, the allowance for in-flight baggage varies. For economy class the in-flight, or cabin baggage, allowance is one piece of baggage which can weigh up to 7 kg (15.4 lbs), must not exceed 115 cm (45") and should be easily stowed in the overhead compartment or under the seat in front of you.

The dimensions for trolley baggage is 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm (22" x 16" x 8"). For garment bags the measurements should not exceed 115 cm or 45" and thickness not exceeding 20 cm or 8" when folded. Briefcase dimensions must not exceed 50 cm x 40 cm x 25 cm (20" x 16" x 10"). Laptops and women's handbags are permitted as well but always check your local airport for specific guidelines.

For suites, first and business class travelers, the same dimensions above apply however, two pieces per passenger are allowed, again depending on your airport security regulations.

Oversized instruments are allowed on board if they can be secured with a "baby seat belt" to the metal frames of the seat. This is not available for classes other than economy. However if you are traveling with a group you may purchase a seat for your musical instrument and book into another class so long as your instrument is being accompanied by someone in your group. The dimensions should not exceed 165 lbs in weight and must be no more than 61" high by 19" (based on armrest to seat width).

In addition to laptops and notebooks, reasonable reading materials, walking sticks, prosthetic devices, baby formula, small cameras, coats, umbrellas, crutches as well as human assistant animals are allowed on board.

Do note that if you exceed the carry-on limits your baggage can be checked at the gate and placed in the hold for collection after the flight.

Checked Baggage

For those with Star Alliance Gold status or those traveling in the upper classes, suite, business and first, four pieces of checked baggage are allowed per passenger. The requirements are per piece to and from North America the sum of each piece must not exceed the three dimensions (length + width + height) 158 cm (62 in) and the weight of each piece is limited to 23kg (50lbs).

For economy class passengers the allowance is two pieces and the sum of the three dimensions (length + width + height) of both pieces together must not exceed 273 cm (107 in) and the outside linear dimensions of each bag must not exceed 158 cm (62 ins). The weight of each piece is limited to 23kg or 50 lbs.

Infants have a separate allowance and are entitled to their own piece of baggage. All strollers, carriages and other baby items may be checked at no extra charge.

Oversized Baggage Charges

Golf equipment, surfboards, ski equipment, large gifts or appliances, scuba equipment and all oversized equipment are charged as a single checked item with overage charges when applicable.

Golf bags have limits of 14 clubs, 12 balls, unlimited tees (within reason) and a pair of golf shoes.

Ski equipment is limited to a pair of skis, a mask, a pair of poles, ski boots or alternately, a snowboard and associated equipment.

For scuba equipment a mask, snorkel, buoyancy equipment, wet suit, weights, an empty scuba tank, fins and a regulator are allowed.

Canoes are charged as two pieces of baggage and bicycles are charged as checked baggage with any excess baggage rates applied.

Do note that these are the regulations to and from North America. Prices vary as per the piece system and will be levied dependent on the dimensions, weight and discretion of the personnel. Normal charges are $50.00 per each excess kilogram (2.2 lbs).

Prohibited Items

Singapore is a very strict country with some stringent laws and severe punishments. Items such as handcuffs, lighters, drugs (other than prescriptions with your name on it) are prohibited. So too are items such as bats, manicure sets, knives of any kind; needless to say weapons of any kind.

In addition to these, on flights to and from North America, you will also be bound by the TSA guidelines which has an extensive list of banned items. These change from time to time so you should see the link to the TSA website in the resource section prior to travel.

It is very important to stress that bringing drugs into Singapore is punishable by death.

Lost and Damaged Baggage

Should you be unfortunate enough to lose a bag en-route to your destination then you should go directly to the Singapore Airlines' help desk at your port of landing to report any damage or loss.

For lost luggage Singapore Airlines will do an immediate trace and as soon as the baggage is found they will have it delivered to you wherever you are staying, at no charge.

For damaged baggage, the local office will arrange to repair or replace the baggage as soon as possible. Singapore Airlines does not take any responsibility for over-packed baggage, normal wear and tear, or broken fragile items. This is your responsibility to secure these items.
