Track A Missing Laptop

Losing your laptop can be a costly and frustrating experience.

You've just returned from a trip, only to discover your laptop briefcase is missing. Is there anything you can do to get your laptop back? It is possible to track the loss of your laptop computer by taking a few steps while it's still in your hands.

Instructions

1. Register the serial number of your new laptop immediately with the manufacturer. This number will help you to both track down and identify your computer once it is located.

2. Utilize free tracking software, such as Prey or Adeona, that you can easily download online to track your computer. Once downloaded, the software will send tracking information to a pre-designated email address to alert you that it's missing.

3. Subscribe to paid online tracking services, such as LoJack or Gadget Track. These services provide peace of mind in the event your laptop goes missing. They will do all of the tracking of the lost machine for you and work with law enforcement to retrieve your stolen laptop.

4. Apply a metal sticker, like those provided by STOP, that, once removed, include an "indelible molecularly etched tattoo" which makes it impossible to resell the machine without the buyer knowing it's stolen property. This is a further deterrent for criminals looking to steal and sell your laptop.
