Portable Homemade Jewelry Displays

Portable Homemade Jewelry Displays

Whether you're taking your jewelry to a craft show or fair, displaying it at a local shop or having a jewelry party at a private home, displays will show off your creations to their best effect. Making your own displays is enjoyable and cost-effective, and you can tailor the style to best match the jewelry you create.

Portable Display Case

Convert an old suitcase, briefcase or other hinged box into a portable case that's a cinch to set up. Look for a case with hinges that will stand upright and stay open without assistance. Line the interior with a cloth that allows your jewelry to stand out; black or dark blue velvet helps make lighter and metallic jewelry shine, while darker items might need a lighter-colored background. Staple or glue the cloth to keep it in place. If you desire, attach old styrofoam cut to size, before lining the box with your background cloth. Hang your jewelry inside by using U-shaped tacks or push pins.

Hanging Display

Use large dowels to create a hanging display for bracelets or necklaces. Using woodworking tools, trim a dowel to the length of the stand you desire. Use larger blocks of wood that will stand alone as ends. Shape as desired, then cut a U-shaped depression to hold the dowel near the top, or drill a hole through the blocks just slightly larger than your dowel. Sand and polish. To use, insert the dowel into one end piece, add your jewelry, and insert the dowel into the other end for a display that, in addition to being attractive, will make jewelry theft more difficult.

Ring Case

Make a ring display case using a medium-sized box with a lid. Create a removable insert using light wood or even cardboard. Cover foam or cardboard rolls with a soft material, and mount them close together, so that a ring will stand upright when placed in the space between the rolls. Place the insert into your box and your rings are ready to travel.

Other Considerations

When showing your jewelry, make your items stand out by experimenting with different sizes and heights for your cases and displays. Bring covered blocks or some interesting old books to show pieces close to the table; taller items should be placed toward the back. Don't be afraid to add color or whimsy if it works for the style of jewelry you're displaying. But avoid overwhelming your space with too much jewelry or a crowded display. Instead, leave space on your display for item tags and information about the materials you use.
