Make Hobo Bags For Women

You can never have too many purses.

Hobo bags are a popular style of purse. Some of Hollywood's biggest stars have worn them. Hobo bags are large, oversized purses that often have a crescent shape at the top and are a bit slouchy. The name of the bag was inspired by hobos who used to carry bindles. A hobo bag is a loose imitation of the bindle, and will hold a lot of your belongings. Instead of buying a hobo bag, why not make your own? It is fun to choose the size, pattern and length of the bag.

Instructions

1. Choose a fabric for your hobo bag. You can buy a piece of fabric from the craft or fabric store or you can find fabric in your house. An old pillowcase or tablecloth with a print will work well for a hobo bag. You need at least 1 yard of fabric.

2. Cut your fabric if you need to. You can either fold your yard of fabric over or you can cut two squares and sew it that way.

3. Pin your fabric on each side and on the bottom if you cut it instead of folding. When pinning, turn your fabric inside out as you would with other garments. Also, pin the top of your hobo bag about 1 inch for a hem. This means you will not have cut edges at the top of your bag.

4. Sew all of the pinned areas with a sewing machine. Sew about 1/2 inch from the edge of the fabric to ensure a strong hold.

5. Add a strap. Take a piece of fabric that will be the length you want your strap to be. The best way to do this is to measure and test it out by pinning it to the purse and looking in the mirror. Cut your fabric. Leave it twice as wide as will need because you will be folding the fabric over. For example, if you want a 3-inch strap, cut 6 inches because it will be folded over and sewn. This will ensure a strong handle that will hold as much as you can fit in your bag.

6. Fold the fabric you are using for the strap. Turn it inside out. Sew only the side of the strap that is not folded. Iron the strap and sew along the edge of each side. Sew the strap securely to your bag. Flip your bag right side out. Add any buttons or other embellishments.
