Make A Laptop Bag Using Foam Padding

Creating a laptop bag using foam padding is a relatively simple way to make a customized laptop case to protect your computer. The foam padding gives the bag extra cushioning to allow more protection for your computer.

Instructions

Creating the Bag

1. Choose the fabric you want to use. Because you are making a bag for a computer, you may want to choose a heavy fabric that will be more durable.

2. Measure and cut four pieces of fabric, each 2 inches longer and 2 inches wider than the computer, two pieces about 4 inches wide and 2 inches longer than the computer, and four pieces about 4 inches wide and 2 inches wider than the computer.

3. Cut two pieces of foam the size of the computer, two pieces about 2 inches wide and as wide as the computer in length, and one piece about 2 inches wide and as long as the computer.

4. Place two same-size pieces of fabric right sides together. Sew around three edges about a half inch from the edge. Turn the fabric right sides out.

5. Insert a corresponding piece of foam into the bag you just made. Fold the last edge inward, leaving just enough room to pinch the two pieces together.

6. Whip stitch the last edge together. This creates a clean seam without any fabric edges poking out. Repeat steps 4-6 for all fabric and foam combinations.

7. Assemble the pieces as follows: Sew the long, thin strip along the long edges of both large pieces, then sew the two smaller strips along the sides of the large pieces and edges of the bottom.

8. Sew either a zipper or some buttons along the top edge of the bag to create a closure.

9. Cut four lengths of fabric about 3 inches wide and as long as you'd like the strap to be. Cut two lengths of foam about 1 inch wide and 2 inches shorter than the fabric strips. Sew two strips together, insert foam, and sew closed as described before. Sew straps to the top edge of the bag.
