When the rainy day blues hit your family, it's time to grab some old feather boas, leftover Halloween make-up and costume jewelry and play some dress up games the whole family will enjoy. Boys will jump at the chance to borrow dad's briefcase or toolbox for an "Off to Work" guessing game, and girls will love the opportunity to borrow mom's jewelry for an impromptu fashion show.
Fashion Show

Setting up a fashion show for the family is a fun and easy way to play dress up with your kids. Turn on the radio and gather an assortment of costumes, sunglasses, scarves, bandannas and some of mommy and daddy's dresses, suits, ties and high heels. Declare one room the dressing room and let the kids dress up using mommy's make-up and jewelry or daddy's ties, watches and briefcase. Parents are can act as both the announcers and the judges for the show, assuming their own funny characters and using score cards as the kids come down the "catwalk." Or daddy could be the photographer and mommy could be the make-up artist, applying lipstick to the girl-y fashionistas or painting a mustache on the little men. When the fashion show is over, keep the music on and turn the room into a disco.
Off To Work

"Off to Work" combines the fun of a dress up game with the excitement of a guessing game. Prepare a variety of dress up clothes and accessories that different people wear to work. Firefighter helmets, a policeman's badge, a stethoscope or briefcase can all be used as props. Family members pick a costume and then act out their role for other members to guess. A firefighter could pretend to use a hose on a fire, a nurse could put a band aid on a teddy bear, and a farmer could pretend to milk a cow. Whoever guesses the character first is the next one to dress up, or keep score and the first player to reach 5 correct guesses wins the game.
Costume Race

Playing a costume race with your family requires a little preparation but is worth the effort. Start off by preparing some, "Who am I?" questions. For example, "I take your order and bring food to your table at restaurants, who am I?" Whoever says waiter or waitress first gets a turn. The second step in preparation is to assemble costumes of three pieces, one set for each member of the family who is not reading the questions. If three members are playing the game you could have one farmer who needs a straw hat, flannel shirt and stuffed cow; the second character may be a doctor with a stethoscope, thermometer and lab coat; the third could be a cook with a rolling pin, apron and whisk. Put all the costume supplies in a pile, read aloud the questions and the first person to correctly answer your question takes a turn and puts on a costume piece. The first family member to assemble a full costume wins the game.
