Visual Fashion Merchandising Ideas

Visual merchandising can drive sales.

Visual merchandising is all about arranging merchandise in a way that generates sales. It allows you to visually capture the attention of shoppers and draw them into your store. Once inside a store, a shopper will look around to see what other items catch the eye. Colors, scents and sounds can all affect a shopper's experience. For this reason, it would be wise to tailor your visual merchandising to appeal to the customers who frequently shop in your store. Visual merchandising not only brings in customers, but it can also keep them in the store through the use of merchandising strategies.

Lifestyle

Every season, designers create fashions for various lifestyles. When customers shop for clothing, they like to able to find what they need relatively easy. Lifestyle merchandising groups together items that all have the same theme. For instance, a "work" lifestyle theme could feature business suits, dressy shoes, briefcases, tote bags and designer watches. You could merchandise another section called "night on the town" where you feature party clothes, festive outfits, shoes and accessories. If someone is shopping for a party outfit, they will know exactly what section to go to find it.

Color-Coordinated

Grouping together shirts, pants and jackets of the same color can help shoppers find the colors they are looking for. For instance, instead of hanging clothing in the color red all over the store, create a red section. All pieces of red clothing will appear in the red section. You can also introduce items in complementary colors that the shopper may not have considered. Shoppers may then be enticed to purchase another item, such as a jacket or scarf to go along with the clothing they select from the red section. Design as many color-coordinated sections as necessary to draw attention to the store and increase sales.

Accessories

Many clothing stores sell accessories as well. Accessories are sometimes locked underneath a glass display case. Some accessories appear on open displays for customers to touch and try on. If you look at the mannequins, you may see them accessorized to coordinate with their clothing. Accessory merchandising is when you display accessories in the most visually stimulating way. You can achieve this by adding accessories to an outfit on a hanger. It allows shoppers to see how jewelry and other items can enhance the look.

Impulse Buys

Nearly every retail store displays products right by the register at checkout. Clearly ,there is a good reason why stores keep products at the register or the "impulse buy" section. As customers wait in line, there is a chance that they will see something they want and add it to their purchase. Stores who keep items near the checkout line use them as an opportunity to "up sell" the customer and make more money. There is usually also sale items and "last chance" items there as well. Low-cost items can work well in the impulse buy section because shoppers may not mind paying another dollar or two for another item they want.
