Homemade Kindle Cover

The Kindle is a popular e-book reader from Amazon. The Kindle comes with a basic cover to protect the device from damage when stowed in a purse or briefcase. A homemade Kindle cover can provide added protection and reflect the personality of the user through a decorative covering. Materials for a cover are available using existing supplies at home or from a craft or fabric store. A homemade cover can be a thoughtful present for e-book enthusiasts or to accompany a gift of the Kindle reader.

Materials

A cover for the Kindle can be adapted from used composition notebook covers, journals or old calendars which contain a hard cover and flexible spine. Consider recycling these items by selecting one with an attractive or sturdy cover and removing the internal pages. Have a large piece of paper (e.g., newspaper) to make a template. If desired, an attractive covering can be added using fabric or gift wrap, so have spray-on adhesive ready during assembly. Use a thin sheet of foam to protect your Kindle's screen and buttons on the back. Affix elastic bands to secure your device in its cover with hot glue or staples.

Measurements

Measure the dimensions of your Kindle. The newer models of the Kindle measure 8 inches x 5.3 inches x 0.36 inches (6 inch diagonal screen) and 10.4 inches x 7.2 inches x 0.38 inches (DX with 9.7 inch diagonal screen). The first generation of Kindle measures 7.5 inches x 5.3 inches x 0.7 inches (6 inch diagonal display). Place your Kindle on one side of the newsprint and pull the paper over the device to cover the front. Carefully cut the paper around the device to create a template for your cover. Open your book cover and center your template on it. If desired, trace the outline of the template on the inside of your book cover. Use a craft knife to cut a rectangle with rounded corners that is 1/4 inch larger on all four sides.

Measure the thin foam sheet to prepare two rectangles that are the same size as the Kindle.

Assembly

Affix two thin elastic bands to the top and bottom of the inside back cover: one, one inch from the edge and the other 1.5 inches from the edge. Secure each end with hot glue or a staple. Center each foam sheet to the inside front cover and inside back cover to cushion your device and affix with spray-on adhesive or glue (the spine will not have any cushioning).

If desired, line the outside and inside of your cover with fabric or gift-wrap, using spray-on adhesive to affix it to the cover and foam material.

Open your book cover, place your Kindle on the inside back cover, pull one elastic band over it hold in place and close the front cover. Pull the other elastic band over the cover to secure.
