Set Briefcase Locks

Unlike combination locks, briefcases do not come with random combinations. Most are actually sold with predicable numbers such as 0000 or 9876. This way, even if you forget the code, you can figure it out without too much trouble. If you want the briefcase to provide you with any security, you need to reset the code to something a little less obvious. Your birthday or address will work in a pinch, but a random number is safer.

Instructions

1. Open your briefcase by turning the numbers to the right combination and pushing the button.

2. Find the reset mechanism on the lock. Some briefcases have a single button or pin while others have two. If there is one, just push it in whatever direction it slides and hold it there. If there are two, you will need to push them either straight together or apart depending on the design of the lock.

3. Slide the numbers to an easy combination to remember, such as 1111 and release the pin or pins.

4. Close the briefcase. Spin the numbers to some random value. Then, turn them back to 1111 or whatever combination you selected again. Open the case back up.

5. Pick a good number this time. The best thing to do is choose a number at random by rolling a ten-sided die four times. Alternately, you could use the location of your favorite line in your favorite book. For example, if the best sentence in the book is on the 5th line of the 4th paragraph of the 85th page, you could use 5485 or 8545 as your code.Write down whatever code you decide on and put it somewhere safe.

6. Reset the combination to your new code.
