When Thomas Alva Edison and Joseph Swan shared their lightbulb invention with the world in 1883, it's evident they hoped to revolutionize the way the world lit the night. What they probably didn't envision was a legion of jokes built around change a lightbulb. But changing a lightbulb is serious business, and to minimize your risk of shock, you should follow certain safety precautions when there is no cage to protect the bulb. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Turn off the light. If you are unsure whether the power is off because the lightbulb is burnt out, either turn off the light at the wall switch or turn the power off at the fuse box.
2. Allow the bulb to cool if it was on long enough to get hot. Test the bulb for heat by quickly touching it with the back of your hand.
3. Have the replacement bulb handy as you switch out the bulbs. If you are changing a lightbulb that is on the ceiling, place the new bulb on the ladder's shelf so it will be handy while you are up on the ladder.
4. Unscrew the burned-out bulb by turning counter-clockwise until the bulb lifts out of the socket.
5. Fit the new bulb into the same socket and tighten it by turning clockwise. Do not over tighten.
6. Turn the light fixture back on. Don't forget to turn the power back on at the fuse box if you cut the power from this source.
7. Discard the old bulb in a container or bag that cannot be punctured by glass.
