Genuinely Believe
Insincerity and pretending to believe in what you are selling is not good enough. A good sales rep will genuinely believe in her product, and in doing so instills a sense of confidence about the product in the potential customer or client that she is presenting it to.
Know Your Product
A sales rep who knows less about his product than the customer is a bad sales rep. A good sales rep knows his product, and he also knows about his competitor's product. Know Your Customer
It's important to not waste your time trying to sell a product to the wrong customer. Doing client and market research before trying to make a sell is a crucial part of being a successful and productive sales rep. On top of knowing who to sell to, it's also important to know when and why you're selling to a certain customer. You should have extensive knowledge of each of your customer's individual needs, and be ahead of them in predicting when they'll be ready to make another purchase, or perhaps when they'll need a new product.
Good Customer Service
Part of a sales representatives job is to make sure the customer is kept up-to-date on news and events about their industry. Establishing rapport with your customers will allow you to more easily sell them new products and services in the future. It will also establish a level of trust and respect that is important for a healthy sales relationship.
Keep in contact with your clients, and make sure to quickly follow-up with answers to any questions they have. What this basically comes down to is giving good customer service.
