Make Monogrammed Pillows

Turn plain pillows into personalized accessories with monograms.

Monograms add a touch of personalized elegance to everything from briefcases and towels to throw pillows. If you're tired of your plain throw pillows, a fancy monogram could be just the thing to spice them up. Monograms don't just represent your name, they also represent your style. They can be as fun or elegant and as muted or colorful as you like. These homemade pillows make thoughtful housewarming gifts. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Slip a piece of scrap cardboard inside each of your plain pillow shams. Plain may mean white or simply a solid color. The cardboard keeps the paint from seeping into the opposite side of the sham.

2. Spread the pillow shams out flat on a clean work surface. Tape a stencil to each sham with painter's tape. The letters must be at least 8 inches tall to be visible from a distance. You may use any letter font you like.

3. Squeeze a quarter-sized puddle of fabric paint onto a paper plate. Dip a sponge into the paint and blot it on a clean part of the plate. Too much paint will ruin the lines of your monogram.

4. Gently dab the paint onto each stencil, filling in the letters completely. You may need to make a few passes with the sponge to fill in all the white spaces. You may also leave the letter spotty if you like a slightly rustic look; just make the edges very sharp.

5. Allow the paint to dry overnight. Gently remove the stencils from the pillow shams. The edges of the monograms should be crisp and clean.
