Use A Humalog Pen

Humalog insulin pens are a convenient and easy way to inject rapid-acting insulin for diabetics using insulin to manage their diabetes. Self-contained and compact, they can be carried in a purse, briefcase or even your jacket pocket. You will need a few supplies to use your pen, but overall the Humalog pen will make life a little easier and eliminate carrying vials of insulin and syringes everywhere you go.

Instructions

Preparing Your Humalog Pen

1. Remove the cover from the pen. Check the insulin cartridge in the pen to be sure it is within the expiration date, not cloudy, and there are no floating particles in the insulin.

2. Remove the pen needle from its protective wrapper. Clean the rubber stopper at the tip of the pen with an alcohol wipe and carefully screw the needle onto the pen.

3. Remove the outer cover from the pen needle and set it aside. Remove the inner cover from the pen needle and throw it away.

4. Tip the pen so the needle is up and tap on the pen to allow any air in the cartridge to flow to the top. Air in the cartridge can cause the pen to deliver a smaller dose than required.

5. Check to see that the dose in the dosage indicator window is showing zero. Set the dose to two units by turning the dosage selector.

6. Press the injection button on the pen. Watch to be sure that insulin comes out of the needle. This forces the extra air out of the pen to ensure an accurate dose is administered.

Delivering the Insulin Dose

7. Verify that the dose window is showing zero. Turn the selector about two units past the required dose, then turn it back to the proper dose.

8. Select an injection site on the abdomen, thigh or back of the upper arm. Clean the site with a new alcohol wipe.

9. Pinch the skin slightly at the injection site and insert the needle straight into the skin. This will help deliver the insulin to the subcutaneous tissue.

10. Press the injection button all the way and hold it down while you count to 10. Verify that the dose indicator has returned to zero and remove the needle from the skin by pulling straight out.

11. Carefully replace the outer needle cap and unscrew the needle. Discard the used needle in an approved sharps or puncture-resistant container.

12. Replace the cover on the Humalog pen and put it in a safe place until you need it again.
