Delta Airlines Rules For Luggage

Make sure your luggage meets Delta Airlines' rules.

You don't want to discover that your luggage violates your airline's luggage rules after you've arrived at the airport. Delta Airlines has rules regarding the size and weight of luggage, and they charge fees for checked luggage in most situations. There are additional fees for checking more than 2 pieces of luggage, oversize or overweight luggage. If you check a third bag that is oversize and overweight, you will be charged all three applicable fees.

Carry-on Luggage

Delta allows you to bring on one carry-on bag. The combined width, length, and height of the bag may not exceed 45 inches (115 centimeters). The unit Delta places in the terminal for checking the size of carry-on bags is approximately 22"x14"x9" (56x36x23 cm). If you try to bring on a bag that is too big, you will have to check it and will be charged a fee. In addition to a carry-on bag, each passenger is allowed one personal item, such as a purse, briefcase, diaper bag, camera bag or laptop computer. You can also bring on a jacket, coat, umbrella, food or other airport purchases, special items such as a child restraint seat, stroller, or assisstive devices such as wheelchairs or crutches.

Checked Luggage

Each piece of checked luggage must weigh less than 50 pounds. The total combined width, length and height of the bag may not exceed 62 inches (157.5 cm). Delta allows certain passengers to check two pieces of luggage without any fees: these are First and Business Class passengers, SkyMiles Medallion members and Passengers who are confirmed on a Full Y-class Economy ticket. All other passengers are subject to fees.

As of March 2010, for flights within the United States and between the United States and Canada, the fee is $23 for the first bag and $32 for the second bag if you check in online at Delta.com. If you check in at the airport, the fee is $25 for the first bag and $35 for the second bag. On flights between the United States or Canada and Europe, you can check one piece of luggage for free. The fee for the second bag is 50 USD/CAD/EUR if you check in online and 55 USD/CAD/EUR if you check in at the airport. Your fee will be charged in the currency of the country you are exiting. If you are flying round-trip, you must pay the fee each way.

Additional Luggage

Delta allows each passenger to check up to 10 bags (4 on Delta Connection) for a fee. Additional bags may be sent on a later flight. For flights within the United States, the fee is $125 for the third bag and $200 each for bags four through ten. For flights between Canada and the U.S., the fee is $125 USD/CAD for the third bag and $200 USD/CAD each for bags four through ten. Your fee will be in the currency of the country you are exiting. Special Luggage

Delta considers certain items to be special baggage. You must notify Delta that you have a special baggage item when you check in online. A Delta representative at the airport will determine if the item requires extra fees or special handling. Special baggage items include musical instruments, sports equipment, perishables, fragile or bulky items, imported merchandise, and medical supplies. Strollers and child seat restraints can be checked for free.
