Retrieve Documents From A Briefcase In Windows Help

Synchronize files on multiple computers using Windows Briefcase.

Households nowadays tend to include more than one personal computer. A traditional desktop computer is often used by all family members. Teenagers and tech-savvy adults may additionally possess their own laptops. With several computers in use, it may become cumbersome to keep all your computer files up to date. File synchronization allows multiple computers to have the most recent iterations of file documents and media libraries. Microsoft Windows-based computers can use a special folder called Briefcase to send and receive synchronized files from a desktop computer to a laptop.

Instructions

1. Prepare a briefcase to sync. Open the folder that contains the files you wish to sync to the other computer. Right click in any blank area in the folder's window, and hover over "New." Select "Briefcase" to open a new Briefcase. Rename the Briefcase, and hit "Enter" on your keyboard to save the changes.

2. Add files into the Briefcase. Click on any desired file, and drag it into the new Briefcase. Repeat this process until the Briefcase contains every file you're intending to synchronize.

3. Insert removable media such as an SD card, portable hard drive or a flash drive into the computer using the removable media's computer port or connector. After successful connection, an Autoplay window will appear. Select "Open Folder To View Files."

4. Copy the Briefcase to the removable media's folder. Right click directly on the Briefcase, and select "Copy," then navigate the cursor into the removable media's folder. Right click in any blank space, and select "Paste" to insert the copied Briefcase into the media folder. Remove the attached media from the first computer, and insert it into the second computer using an available media slot.

5. Open individual files in the Briefcase. Once again, select "Open Folder to View All Files." Access the files by double-clicking each individual item. Make any changes you want to the file, and select "Save." Repeat this process with every file in the Briefcase if need be. Detach the removable media from the second computer, and reinsert it into the first computer.

6. Synchronize files with the first computer. Click on "Open Folder To View All Files" again to view the content inside the removable media. Refer to the Briefcase within that folder. Right click on the Briefcase, and select "Update All." The files within both Briefcases will be the same.
