Most dial locks are secured by a three-number code from 0-39.
Dial locks are a safe and secure way of keeping your briefcase contents out of the reach of others. Most dial locks that are small enough for a briefcase are manufactured around a three-number combination, which you must know to unlock it. Dial locks are also built to be turned each way a certain amount of times and in a specific order. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Memorize the code for your dial lock if you do not already know it. Some companies might hand you a new briefcase and inform you of the code on delivery - others might send you a copy of the code by email. Most dial locks are numbered from 0 to 39 so your combination will consist of three numbers between those two values, e.g. 18, 15 and 34 or 19, 29 and 36.
2. Turn the dial three times to the right (clockwise) and stop it at the first number of your lock combination. Ensure that the dial stops at the exact point where the indicator marker is: nearly all lock indicators are located at the 12 o'clock position and are symbolized by a small triangle.
3. Turn the dial left (anti-clockwise) by one full turn, passing your first number once. Continue turning until you reach the second number of your dial lock code. Stop when the number lines up with the dial's indicator.
4. Turn the dial to the right (clockwise) and stop as soon as you reach the third number. Again ensure that the number lines up with the indicator.
5. Pull down on the dial to open the lock. Enter the combination correctly and the shackle (a U-shaped metal bar) should loosen and disconnect from the dial. Your briefcase will now be unlocked.
6. Lock your briefcase again by pushing the shackle back into the dial. Pull down on the device just to confirm that it has been locked.
