Sale Representative Duties

Sales representatives can have assigned customer accounts


A sales representative represents a company and sells a product or service to consumers or businesses. The job might require travel within the same city or around the world. Some sales representatives stay at a retail location and customers visit them to seek out their product or service.


Primary Responsibilities


The primary responsibilities of a sales representative include presenting and selling company products to clients and potential clients. The sales representative also prepares an action plan to attract new customers and retain old ones. The may meet with the client at home or office, finding out his needs and probing for information that may help the sales representative present the product in a more inviting manner.


Meetings


The sales representative may also be required to attend special meetings to learn about new products. The new product information may be presented at a factory or corporate meeting. She may need to attend company information sessions to stay updated on what products and services she can be offered to the client and which ones may be eliminated. Trade shows and conferences may also be a part of the sales representative's schedule. At trade shows, the sales representative may be required to sell products at a table or booth.


Education


The education requirements for a sales representative vary by company. Many companies just require a high school education. Others may ask for years of experience or a college degree. The sales representative may need to have strong math skills, reading comprehension and writing ability. The sales representative must also be able to connect with the clients one-on-one or in small groups.
