Name Tags Etiquette

When preparing to attend or organize a professional event, it's essential to know create and wear name tags appropriately. Being aware of the etiquette associated with name tags will help you to create the right type of identification for colleagues and to wear the tags in the way that will present a good first impression.

Names and Titles

Business name tags should feature the first and last name of the colleague, in that order. It is not necessary to include an honorific on the name tag, such as Dr. or Attorney, unless the person is attending a special event such as a convention just for medical or legal professionals where this information would be relevant. If the name tag includes the person's affiliation or company, this information should be in a smaller font than the person's name.

Type of Font

When printing name tags, it's best to use the largest type size possible. This will make the tag easy to read, even from far away. The name should be in the center of the name tag. Fonts like Times New Roman or Old Bookman Style are ideal, because the letters are easy to read. It is best not to use cursive or italics on name tags. While this makes the font fancier, it may also make the letters more difficult to read.

Wear Name Tags

Name tags belong on the right shoulder. This way, when a person goes to shake hands with another colleague, the tag will be clearly seen. Women who are carrying a purse or briefcase on this shoulder should switch it, so that the name tag is evident. It is proper etiquette to wear the name tag for the duration of the day's events.

Bringing Name Tags

It is not appropriate for attendees to bring their own name tags to a convention or business event. All participants should be wearing tags in the same format to show uniformity. Name tags that look especially different will make the wearer look out of place and unprofessional, which may not lead to a favorable reputation.

Creating and Maintaining Name Tags

When making name tags, it's best to use quality paper so that the name tag will be intact for the entire event. Plastic coverings will keep the tag from being stained. Attendees should make sure the tags are presentable at all time. Crooked or folded tags give the impression that the attendee is lazy and unorganized, which can inhibit business deals.
