The Kindle, Amazon's e-book reader, is finding its way into everything from designer purses and briefcases to diaper bags and high school backpacks. The recent release of the Kindle's global wireless capability and the textbook/PDF friendly Kindle DX allow you to download and carry as many books or files as you need with you in one device. Amazon notes the latest models in the Kindle family can last up to four hours with wireless (Sprint Whisper-net) enabled, or two weeks with the wireless turned off.
How the Kindle Uses Battery Power
One of the revolutionary aspects of the Kindle technology is the use of electronic ink, which allows the text on your display to look the same as it would in print copy. The use of electronic ink helps to prevent strain on your eyes like a computer can, and also helps lengthen the battery life of your device. The electronic ink itself does not use battery power. The Kindle only uses battery power when wireless is enabled, when you are shopping in the Kindle store, when you are turning a page, or when turning the device on or off.
Recharging your Kindle
In keeping with the Kindle's innate mobility, you can choose to recharge your Kindle or Kindle DX through a standard outlet or through your computer. Amazon notes on its website that the Kindle and Kindle DX come with a U.S. power adapter (supports 100V-240V), USB 2.0 cable and a rechargeable battery. It fully charges in approximately four hours via the included U.S. power adapter.
To charge your Kindle through your computer, attach the power cord to the port located on the center on the bottom of your device. Next, attach the USB plug to a USB port on your computer.
Charging your Kindle through a standard outlet requires attaching the power cord to the port on the center bottom of your device. Attach your power adapter to the USB plug. This will enable your power cord to plug into any standard U.S. outlet. You can choose to keep your Kindle on while it charges, or you can turn it off. Using your Kindle while it is being charged will not interrupt charging.
