Measure Luggage

Measure Luggage

Air travel can be a confusing process if the traveler is not familiar with the size requirements for carry-on and checked luggage. While these restrictions will vary by carrier and airline, it is up to the traveler to check in advance of his flight and make sure all luggage meets the specified size required by the carrier. But don't panic, it's easy to measure luggage and obtain the lineal value most airlines use to note size restrictions.

Instructions

1. Measure in lineal inches, adding the length, width and depth of the luggage to obtain the lineal value in inches.

2. Place the luggage on a table. Using a measuring stick or tape, measure the longest side of the luggage going from left to right. Record the length of the luggage.

3. Measure from the bottom side of the luggage. With the luggage still positioned sideways on the table, measure from the bottom of the luggage (flush against the table) to the top of the luggage. Record the width of the luggage.

4. Find the depth by measuring the space between the front side of the luggage and the back side. Locate the zipper and then measure the space between the seam on one side and the seam on another.

5. Add the length, width and depth of the luggage. For example, if the length is 12 inches and the width is 9 inches and the depth is 4 inches, add all three numbers. In this example, the lineal value is 25 inches.
