Dress Appropriately For An Interview

The first impression you make with prospective employers depends largely on your physical appearance and the professionalism you present. The clothes you wear are the part of the interview process that you have the most control over, according to www.seekingsuccess.com. Take time to dress for an interview. It shows that you care about the position. Pay attention to details. Wearing a suit is not the only thing that matters when you walk into an interview.

Instructions

1. Choose a suit. Dark blue or gray suits are best. Women generally should wear a suit with a skirt. Make sure the suit is tailored to fit you well and is perfectly pressed.

2. Choose a shirt. A white or ivory oxford shirt is best. The shirt, like the suit, should be clean and pressed. It should not be too tight or at all revealing, if you are a woman.

3. Purchase hosiery, if you are a woman. Choose a sheer color that matches your skin. Pack an extra set in case it gets ripped or ruined on the way to the interview.

4. Select a conservative briefcase. Blue, black or taupe is appropriate. Make sure the briefcase is clean and polished leather. Pack several resumes and a pen and paper.

5. Select the jewelry you want to wear. Minimal jewelry is better. Wear only real gold, silver or pearls. Men should wear a working watch and a college or wedding ring. Remove any extraneous piercing jewelry. Men should not wear chain necklaces.

6. Select a tie, if you are male. Choose a new or like-new conservative silk tie. Make sure the bottom of the tie touches your belt buckle after you knot it.

7. Select shoes. Men should wear polished dress shoes. Women should wear closed-toe shoes that match the suit.

8. Apply makeup, if you are a female. Apply only minimal amounts of makeup, and use natural shades that match your skin tone.

9. Trim your nails and cuticles. Apply lotion if they are dry. Females may paint their nails with light pink polish.

10. Cut your hair one week before the interview. Style it the day of the interview in a short, attractive style and with minimal facial hair if you are male. Females should get cuts that complement their face shape.

11. Smell nice. Wear light or no perfume. Brush your teeth, and do not smoke before the interview. Bring mints to pop in before the interview.
