Spirit Airline Baggage Policy

Learning about your airline's luggage policies can make for a smoother trip.

Spirit Airlines has very specific requirements regarding the size and amount of baggage that a passenger may bring aboard a flight. Airline passengers must pay fees for certain carry-on items and all checked baggage. Before booking your next flight, it may be helpful to familiarize yourself with the airline's baggage policy.

Carry-on Items

Spirit Airlines permits each passenger to bring one personal, carry-on item aboard each flight free of charge. This includes items such as purses, laptops, briefcases or backpacks. Carry-on items must be able to fit safely underneath the passenger's seat and may not exceed the dimensions 16 inches by 14 inches by 12 inches. Items such as diaper bags, camera cases, car seats, outer garments and other such personal items do not count toward the carry-on item allowance. These items may be brought onto the flight at no charge.

Large Carry-on Items

If you have a large carry-on item that will not fit under your seat, you may bring it on the flight for an additional fee. Large carry-on items still must meet size requirements including being able to fit safely in the overhead bin. Large carry-on items may not exceed the dimensions 22 inches by 18 inches by 10 inches.

Checked Luggage

Spirit Airlines requires all passengers to pay a fee for each bag or item that they check. To avoid additional fees, all checked baggage must be 62 linear inches or smaller and may not exceed 50 pounds in weight. Items that exceed the size requirements may be charged additional fees. The airline charges a fee for each item, and a higher fees apply after the first two items. Passengers may check a maximum of five items, and all items must have identification on the outside of the baggage.

Other Checked Items

Passengers may check other items such as golf clubs, surfboards and other sporting equipment for an additional fee. Fees vary based up on the item and overweight charges may apply.

Baggage Exclusions

Any passenger may check infant or child seats, strollers, bassinets, wheelchairs or other mobility devices free of charge. These items do not count toward a passenger's baggage allowance.

Restrictions

During peak seasons such as holidays, Spirit Airlines may place restrictions on the amount of baggage that a passenger can bring aboard flights. The airline may also place restrictions on large or oversized items.
