Prevent Laptop Theft

A laptop security cable is just one method of protecting your laptop against theft.

A stolen laptop not only costs money to replace but can cause significant damage if you store personal information on the computer. While preventing laptop theft is not always possible, several simple steps will reduce the risk of having your laptop stolen. Frequent travelers and those who use their laptops in public areas increase the risk of theft compared to those who leave their laptops at home. Knowing what you can do to prevent laptop theft and prepare in case the worst happens will give you the peace of mind to travel with your laptop.

Instructions

1. Write down your laptop's serial number and model. You will need this crucial information if your laptop is ever stolen. Consider investing in tracking software to install on your laptop. If a thief takes the laptop and connects to the Internet then the laptop will broadcast its location and the company who owns the software can track it down.

2. Choose a plain laptop case for travel. An expensive looking laptop case draws more attention and sends the message that you own an expensive laptop. When you must leave the laptop in your car, hide it out of sight so that a person looking in cannot see it. Keep the laptop on you as much as possible and only leave it in the car when you have to.

3. Store your laptop in a portable laptop car safe when traveling often. The safe resembles a metal briefcase and locks your laptop inside. Store it in the trunk of your car during travel. Often a thief will leave behind difficult items. While a determined thief could still try and steal the safe itself, most thieves don't want to spend the extra time and effort to do so.

4. Bolt your laptop to a desk or immovable object with a laptop security cable when you have to leave it in a public setting such as an office. Check first to see if your laptop has a Universal Security Slot (USS) for the cable to plug into. If not, you'll need a cable that comes with a method of attaching it to the laptop such as an adhesive attachment on one end. When you leave for the day, lock your laptop to the desk.
