Make A Leather Pouch For A Knife

A fixed-blade knife, like a Bowie, calls for a sheath. A folding knife, like a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife, calls for a pouch. You may wish to sew a pouch without belt loops to protect the knife from wear or to make it to hang on your belt and to keep your knife handy. Either way, you can sew a simple envelope-type pouch out of a single, long strip of whatever leather you choose.

Instructions

1. Select a piece of leather for your pouch. You may purchase a piece of cowhide from a craft shop or cut up a heavy leather jacket or briefcase. The piece should be at least twice as wide as your knife, folded, and three times as long.

2. Measure the circumference of the knife, at its thickest. Add 1 1/2 inches to this measurement. This will be the width of your leather piece.

3. Measure the length of the knife, and multiply by three. This will be the length of your leather piece.

4. Cut your leather piece to the two measurements in Steps 2 and 3, using a craft knife or heavy shears. You will be left with a long strap.

5. Lay the knife lengthwise on the rough side---or the flesh side---of the leather strap.

6. Fold one end of the strap over the knife so that it leaves about one-quarter of the knife exposed. This will enable you to pull it out of the pouch, easily.

7. Remove the knife and glue down the flap you've created with a bead of craft glue along either side. Allow to dry.

8. Return the knife to this pouch and fold the unglued flap over the knife to enclose it.

9. Mark the leather about halfway along the length of the knife. Cut the leather from side to side at that point. This will form your top flap.

10. Return the knife to the pouch. Pinch the leather on either side of the knife, so that it forms a tighter envelope. You will stitch along either side of this tighter envelope to form the pouch.

11. Use your sewing machine, or heavy needle and thread, to sew the envelope.

12. Trim excess leather from the outside edges, using your heavy shears or craft knife..

13. Glue, then sew, a hook-and-eye enclosure, such as a Velcro dot, under the loose flap and on the envelope to enclose the knife. Alternatively, sew a button to the envelope and cut a button hole in the flap. A metal snap will scratch the knife.
