Practical Grad Gifts

Graduation means the end of one phase of life and the beginning of another. Save gifts like jewelry and DVDs for a student's birthday and use this opportunity to give him something that prepares him for what comes next.

Middle School

For a child entering high school, choose a gift that will help her adjust to these changes. For instance, a self-help book about respond to peer pressure or study effectively.

High School

If the student is going off to college, he'll need organizational and decorative items for his dorm room or apartment. Blankets, pillows, closet organizers and shower caddies all come in handy. If he's not going to college and is starting work right away, make a gift basket filled with healthy snacks he can keep in his desk.

College

When a student graduates college, it may be the first time she is financially responsible for herself. She may need to move to a new city, buy a car or work clothes, so money is a practical gift. Gift cards to a grocery store or gas station will also help her get on her feet.

Graduate School

When a student finishes graduate school, he's on his way into the workforce. A gift such as a monogrammed leather briefcase or electronic organizer helps him make a smooth transition from student to professional.
