Become A Sales Rep

Sales representatives are confident and have a professional image.


A sales representative is responsible for selling and marketing the products and services of a company or organization. Some sales positions only require a high school diploma while others, such as technical sales, require a bachelor’s degree according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The only requirement for being hired within some organizations is previous sales experience. Sales representatives must have good people skills and communication skills. To be a sales representative you have to like selling, and you can't get discouraged by rejection. Sales representatives need to know persuade.

1. Apply for a job in retail sales at a technology store, retail clothing store, in customer service or as a bank teller. These are entry-level positions, which will increase your sales skills. These types of jobs will help you gain valuable experience in the area of sales. Many customer-service positions require representatives to cross-sell different products and services in addition to handling customer inquiries. Bank tellers are required to offer different products such as checking accounts and overdraft protection to customers.


2. Find out as much information as you can about a company's products and services while in an entry-level position. To be a sales representative, you will need superior product knowledge, and you will need to know overcome objections. If you can match a customer’s needs with the feature and benefits of a product or service, you increase your rate of sales success. Entry-level positions establish a sales foundation for better positions.


3. Set up several informational interviews with sales managers of different organizations. An informational interview is designed to put you in front of someone who has information about sales. You get a chance to ask 10 or 15 questions about a career in sales. Your purpose is to gather information about sales. This will help you later on when you actually have a job interview. If the company ever has an opening, it may want to hire you at. An informational interview can help you land a more prominent job in the area of sales.


4. Establish a good attitude and personality. There have been many people who have been recruited from their jobs, which had nothing to do with sales, because they had a good attitude and personality. You never know who you are going to meet, in your current position, on a day to day basis. It’s always a good idea to maintain a positive attitude and have a great personality even if you are not currently in sales.
