Airline Carry On Travel Rules

To ensure overhead bin space and your safety, several organizations--the Federal Aviation Administration, Transportation Security Administration and airlines themselves--have developed regulations regarding carry-on items.

Roll-a-board Luggage

Each passenger is permitted to bring one roll-a-board luggage piece onto the aircraft. The size an airline will accept is dependent upon the type of aircraft it flies. For size regulations, check with your airline.

Personal Items

In additional to a roller-board, a traveler is permitted one personal item. Examples include purses, laptop cases, briefcases and backpacks.

Exempt Bags

Bags containing food or supplies for a baby--such as a diaper bag--are exempt from the restriction of one roller-board and personal item.

Liquids & Gels

Though one may bring luggage into the aircraft's cabin, the Transportation Security Administration only allows each passenger to bring only one quart-sized bag full of 3.2 oz. liquid or gel containers for security purposes.

Weight Limit

Bags placed into the overhead compartments usually cannot exceed 50 pounds. It is best to check with your airline before traveling for specific restrictions.
