Create A Hiring Flyer

Create a Hiring Flyer

Get the word out about your organization's job openings by creating a hiring flyer. Flyers are quick and simple promotional materials that can be made in minutes. Hand them out at recruitment sessions, distribute them to mailing lists, or leave them in public areas where potential employees visit. With just a couple of clicks through a software program, you'll be ready to go out and start a round of interviews.

Instructions

Using Microsoft Word

1. Open the Word program on your computer. Pull down the "File" menu and click "New." When the "New Document" pane opens, type "flyer" into the "Search online for" box, then click "Go." You can be more specific by typing in "job flyer" or "hiring flyer," but you'll limit your results.

2. Scroll through the list of available flyer templates. Click a preview link, then click the "Download" button to open the flyer in the Word workspace. Highlight the placeholder headline on the flyer and type directly over it with your own headline, such as "Qualified Billing Specialists Needed Immediately." Highlight the new headline and use the text toolbar at the top of the screen to change the words' font, size, position and color.

3. Highlight the rest of the placeholder text on the flyer and replace it with your own text. Include a description of the company and job, applicant qualifications, start date and get in touch with the hiring committee.

4. Pull down the "Insert" menu. Click "Picture" and select "Clip Art." Type a word or phrase into the "Search for" box, such as "briefcase," "pencil," "application" or something related to your industry, such as "hard hat," "teacher" or "painting." When you've decided on your phrase, click "Go." Scroll through the results and double-click an image, which appears on the flyer.

5. Pull down the "File" menu and click "Save As." Type a name for the flyer and save it to your computer.

Using Microsoft Paint

6. Open Paint, pull down the "File" menu and select "Open." Browse to a job-related photo or image to use for the flyer and double-click the file name. When it opens in the Paint workspace, click the "Select" icon, which looks like a rectangle made of dotted lines. Draw an outline around the image and press the "Ctrl" and "C" keys on your keyboard, which copies the image.

7. Click "File" and select "New." Click "Image" and select "Attributes." Set the page dimensions as 8.5 inches by 11 inches and click "OK." When the white flyer space appears, press the "Ctrl" and "V" keys on the keyboard to paste in the copied image. Drag it into place on the center of the flyer.

8. Click the "Text" tool, which looks like an "A" on the toolbar, then click the top of the flyer. If a toolbar doesn't pop up, pull down the "View" menu and select "Text Toolbar." Select a font and size, then type the flyer headline, such as "Third Shift Security Needed."

9. Move your cursor to the bottom of the flyer and type the job details, such as years of experience required, licensing applicants, hours and responsibilities.

10. Click the "File" menu and select "Save As." Type a name for the flyer and select a destination to save it to on your computer.

Using Microsoft Publisher

11. Open Publisher, click "Publications for Print" and select "Flyers." Scroll through the flyer templates and double-click one to open it in the Publisher workspace. Move your cursor into the placeholder headline text box and click to highlight it. Type your new headline directly over the placeholder, such as "Now Hiring Waitstaff: Free Meals."

12. Highlight the rest of the placeholder text boxes on the flyer and replace them with information such as how and where to apply, job hours, prior experience required and where to get more information.

13. Right-click the placeholder image on the flyer and select "Change Picture." Choose "Clip Art." Type a word or phrase into the "Search for" box and click "Go." Scroll through the resulting images and double-click one, which takes the other's place on the flyer.

14. Pull down the "File" menu and click "Save As." Give the flyer a name, select a place to save it on your computer, and click the "Save" button.
