Cut Foam For A Gun Case

Cut Foam for a Gun Case

Gun cases are designed to provide protection for firearms during transport and storage. The inside of many cases are lined or fitted with foam padding which provides a secure and cushioned area around the gun. It may be necessary to replace foam padding periodically due to age or wear. Cutting foam to fit the inside of the case is essential to securing a gun during transport.

Instructions

1. Measure the case as well as the foam padding to ensure there is enough foam material to fit inside the carry case. It is an advantage to have a single piece of foam rather than two or more pieces. Also consider the thickness of the foam. Attempt to match the new and original material, if possible. The necessary thickness of the foam can typically be determined by measuring the depth of the case up to the rim. Measure both the top and bottom; the depths may vary.

2. Measure the inside of the case, taking into consideration any angles or indentations. Measure a section of the case at a time and transfer the measurements to the foam. Mark distances initially and then go back and essentially connect the dots with a ruler or yard stick. For a tight fit, add about 1/4 inch to the overall size of the foam so the padding will be held tightly in place.

3. Consider placing the case on the foam and tracing around the outside. This will transfer the shape and provide a larger footprint which, when cut, should fit snugly inside.

4. Use a sharp knife such as an Exacto to cut the foam. Place the foam on a self-healing cutting pad or old work surface. Lay a ruler on the line and press down firmly to compress the foam. Push the tip of the blade down through the foam and follow the edge of the ruler.

5. Fit the cut foam into the case, taking note of any gaps or excess. If there are gaps, a small piece of foam may be used to fill. If there is excess foam, simply trim a little at a time until there is a good fit.
