Dye A Purse

Dyeing a purse to another color allows you to accessorize with other outfits.

You may want to dye an existing purse to a new color to match an outfit or just brighten the shade a bit. Shoe dye kits are available online and in shoe stores in a large variety of colors. Proper preparation of the fabric allows the dye to penetrate the purse fibers and change the color. It may take several coats of dye to achieve the color you wish and adequate drying time between each. You will want to begin dyeing your purse in advance of wearing it to a function. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Pour the preparer from a shoe dye kit onto a soft cloth and clean all surfaces of the purse that you are dyeing. Rub the preparer on to remove any dust, debris or other items that will not allow the dye to absorb into the purse.

2. Place masking tape on any metallic parts of your purse that you do not want to dye. Cover metal clasps, rings on the strap or any emblems.

3. Stir the dye with the enclosed paintbrush until it is thoroughly mixed.

4. Paint the dye on the upper side of the purse strap in a light coat. Screw an eye hook into the ceiling and hang the purse on it. Apply the dye with the paintbrush to the front, back and bottom of the purse evenly and in a light coat. Let the purse hang overnight to dry.

5. Remove the purse from the eye hook and turn the purse strap inside out. Paint dye on the underside of the strap in a light coat. Allow the purse to dry overnight.

6. Repeat Steps 3, 4 and 5 as necessary to achieve a darker color.

7. Remove the masking tape from the purse.
