How Many Bags Can A Person Take On An Airplane

How Many Bags Can a Person Take on an Airplane?

With airlines changing rules on a daily basis about checked and carry-on luggage, it is sometimes hard to keep up. Plus, the rules for domestic travel are different than they are for international travel. When in doubt, check with your airline for the latest information.

Types

Carry-on luggage is that which you actually hand carry on board the aircraft to your seat and store under the seat or in the overhead luggage bin. United States carriers allow one carry-on bag and one personal item The maximum weight for a carry-on bag on most domestic carriers is 40 lbs., with the maximum size of 45 inches (length plus width plus height). A personal item could be a purse, diaper bag, briefcase, laptop computer, camera case or an item similar in size. Additionally, you are allowed to bring these items that do not count towards your personal item: food items for on-board consumption; wheelchairs or crutches; one box or bag of duty-free merchandise; umbrella, jacket or coat.

During extremely busy times of the year, certain carry-on and check luggage restrictions may apply to your flight, so always check with your carrier for the latest information.

Types

Checked luggage refers to the luggage you will be checking into the cargo area of the plane. You can check as many bags as you wish, but each bag costs incrementally more money. Stay within the baggage requirements restrictions of no more than 50 lbs. per bag and 62 linear inches (total length plus width plus height).

American Airlines, United and Delta charge $15 for the first checked bag and $25 for the second bag, as of 2008, when traveling economy class within the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. These airlines allow two checked bags free of charge when traveling internationally.

Exceptions to this policy include customers who purchase First or Business Class tickets, frequent flyer club members, U.S. Military, as well as customers who purchase full-fare tickets in Economy Class.

Features

If you need to check a specialty item such as sporting equipment, strollers, musical instruments, bulky/fragile items or pets, be sure to check with your carrier for additional charges you may incur. Typically a specialty item is considered one of your checked items.

Warning

With carry-on luggage, remember the transportation safety's limitations of "3-1-1." This means that all liquids must be in a 3-oz. bottle or less, packed in a 1-quart clear plastic sealable bag, with one bag allowed per person. Larger liquids should be placed in your checked luggage.

Warning

The TSA also has checked luggage restrictions on sharp objects such as knives, sporting goods, guns, firearms, tools, self-defense weapons as well as explosive and flammable materials. Check your airline or the TSA website for specific rules regarding these items.
