Having a cell phone in Italy is convenient, given the country's excellent coverage.
If you're traveling or living in Italy, having a cellular phone is advantageous. It's less expensive than a landline and offers greater convenience, given that you'll be able to make calls almost anywhere because coverage throughout the country is reliable.
To gain access, you'll need an Italian subscriber identity module (SIM) card for your phone. You can try to find a used SIM card to save a few euros, or you can simply go to a cell phone store and purchase a new prepaid SIM card for around $6.50 (5 euros), as of mid-September 2010. A SIM card for a contract plan will be the same price.
Instructions
1. Try to find used SIM cards for sale from their owners on Italy's Craigslist.org or Annunci.it websites. No stores in Italy sell used SIM cards.
2. If you cannot find a used SIM card, go to a cell phone store in Italy or purchase a used SIM card ahead of time from an international online vendor such as ItalyCellPhone.com.
3. Once you have a SIM card, insert it into your phone, following the directions in the instruction manual your cell phone came with.
4. Purchase credit for your SIM card if you are using a prepaid card. Credit is available online and at Italian grocery and convenience stores, tobacconists and cell phone stores.
