A practical man prefers gifts that he'll actually use and that make sense to him. However, no matter what he might say, not one man is so practical that he wants to open a box to discover socks. It's undeniably a challenge to choose a practical gift that's also exciting and unusual; however, with a little imagination, you can give your friend the gift of convenience, security or a little insurance against a bad day.

1. Show him the money. Nothing is more practical than a gift of money; however, money is also the most unimaginative gift possible. It's almost a polite way of saying, "I couldn't think of anything." When looked at it from another angle, though, while a gift card or a wad of cash has a set value, the gift of an investment is one that has the potential to appreciate. It doesn't have to be expensive, either. Give your friend a few shares of stock, a novel signed by the author or a silver bullion coin. If he's a collector, give him an antique model or small, affordable artwork, such as a sketch, from his favorite artist. He'll enjoy the gift now and possibly even more later.
2. Save him time. Nowadays, most men are working harder than ever, meaning that time has become a precious commodity. Time saved is also aggravation saved, which may (possibly) help lower your friend's blood pressure and improve his health. Some time-saving possibilities include an annual rail, bus or toll booth pass, inclusion in (free) rental car programs that allow him to skip the line or the purchase of a reserved parking spot near his workplace or favorite sports venue.
3. Cover him in an emergency. If he's single and can't cook, take pity and give him a gift certificate to a company that delivers home-cooked meals. If he works in an office and must wear a suit, give him the gift of a prepaid account at the local dry cleaner. If he lives in an area where inclement weather is common, give him a briefcase solar generator to provide some help in the event of a power outage.
