Tie Plastic Keychains With Beads

Tie Plastic Keychains With Beads

Creating homemade keychains is an activity for children and adults. Making keychains allows you to be creative. Some handmade keychains can take about 20 minutes to make and you may have most of the materials already. They can be used as gifts for any occasion and can be used to distinguish sets of keys, backpacks, suitcases, gym bags or briefcases. Tailor your keychain to the person you are giving it to -- make birthday keychains, holiday keychains and keychains with your friend's name on them. Use strings of beads to add texture to keychains.

Instructions

Create Plastic Keychains

1. Wash and dry leftover Styrofoam products you have in your house such as meat and fish trays.

2. Draw a circle with a radius of 3.5 inches on the Styrofoam.

3. Draw any design, image or text inside the circle.

4. Cut out the circles and hole punch a hole in the top. Heat the trays in a 425-degree preheated oven for two to three minutes. This will shrink the keychains to a hard plastic, about 1.5 inches in diameter. Make sure the kitchen is well ventilated.

5. Allow the circles to cool. Place each designed keychain circle around a key ring.

Add Bead Strings

6. Measure string in 8 inch strips. Take one strip in your hand and fold it in half. Create a loop at the top. Tie a knot so the loop remains.

7. Feed the string end through the beads, stacking the beads on top of each other. Create a pattern with the bead colors or designs, or use a variety of beads to help them stand out. Tie a knot at the end of the string.

8. Feed the loop through the key ring to attach it with the decorative plastic keychain you made out of the Styrofoam trays.
