American Airlines Carry On Rules

Plan ahead for a smooth trip.

You have purchased a plane ticket with American Airlines and are ready to fly. But not so fast. There are specific guidelines and restrictions you must follow to bring carry-on items aboard the flight. American Airlines' official website provides detailed information about the type of item and size you are permitted to bring as a carry-on. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) also provides guidelines to help you move quickly through security checkpoints.

Size Restrictions

American Airlines official website describes the dimensions of acceptable carry-on luggage. Passengers are allowed one personal item such as a small backpack, purse, briefcase, laptop bag or tote that does not exceed 36 inches. Along with the personal item, each passenger is allowed a carry-on bag. The AA.com website provides the maximum dimensions for carry-on luggage: 22 inches long x 14 inches wide x 9 inches tall. Finally, all carry-on items should be able to fit in the overhead storage compartment. To help determine whether your bag will fit, check its size in the airline's size tester before boarding the plane.

Liquids

The TSA has limited the amount of liquids that can be taken in carry-on baggage since Aug. 10, 2006. The TSA advises travelers to use the 3-1-1 method for packing liquids in their carry-on bags. Travelers should use a 3.4 ounce plastic bottle or less to carry liquids, one quart-sized clear plastic bag with a zip top to hold bottles and one bag per passenger. All liquids, gels and aerosols in containers bigger than 3.5 ounces must be packed in checked baggage.

Additional Items

American Airlines security makes exceptions for some additional items. Outerwear, such as coats, wraps and hats, are acceptable to wear aboard the plane. Books and newspapers are also accepted as carry-on items. Passengers may bring a small bag of food to eat during the flight. Strollers, diaper bags and approved safety seats may also be carried aboard for children. Medical assistance devices, such as wheelchairs, walkers and therapeutic oxygen, are also welcomed aboard. These larger carry-on items are checked in with a flight attendant upon boarding and returned to the passenger at the destination.
