Preparation Ensures Hassle-Free Flying
Arriving at the airport prepared can eliminate many last-minute hassles. Knowing the baggage rules before you pack will ensure you arrive with the correct size and weight of checked baggage, carry-on luggage and miscellaneous items you need for your trip. Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air provide the following guidelines to help you arrive prepared and make it to your gate on time.
Checked Baggage
Check Bags on Alaska Air For A Fee
Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air allow two checked bags per plane ticket. The fee for the first bag is $15 and is $25 for the second. Each bag must weigh less than 50 lbs., and measure less than 62 linear inches (length + height + width). Payment can be made at airport check-in via kiosk or ticket agent, or anywhere with Web Check-In. Alaska Airlines requests you pay with your debit or credit card when checking in online or at a kiosk for faster service. If your luggage does not meet these criteria, there will be additional fees. Bags weighing over 50 lbs. will be charged $50, those measuring up to 80 inches will be $50, and 81 to 115 inches will be $75 (all are one-way fees). Some sporting equipment such as bicycles, kayaks, surfboards, skateboards, boogie boards, and archery and bowling equipment are allowed as checked luggage but must meet the weight and measurement requirements, or be subjected to the stated fees.
Carry-On Baggage
Carry It On
One carry-on bag is allowed per plane ticket. It can measure up to 10 inches in height, by 17 inches wide, by 24 inches long. This size must include handles and wheels. In addition, one personal item is also allowed such as a laptop computer, briefcase or purse. Either one of these carry-on items must fit underneath the seat in front of you. Items that do not meet these restrictions will be charged $25 per bag and tagged for delivery to baggage claim at the destination.
Carry-On Exceptions
Alaska Air makes allowances for several items which may exceed the carry-on baggage restrictions, as long as they may be safely stowed in a cabin compartment of the aircraft. The item will count as the one allowable carry-on piece of luggage. As stated on the carrier's website, these items are "advertising portfolios, paintings, delicate scientific equipment, fishing poles, human organs and garment bags." Additional items allowed that are not included in the carry-on restrictions include "coats, hats, umbrellas, reading material, FAA-approved child restraint seats, stroller, pets in carriers, wheelchairs, canes, crutches, and medical supplies or equipment, small musical instruments and ashes sealed in a leak-proof container."
Tips
Military baggage may exceed the weight and measurement limits without being charged the normally associated fees.
If you are traveling on Alaska Airlines or Horizon Air for one leg of your journey but your itinerary includes travel on another airline as well, check on that airline's baggage restrictions, as they may vary.
