Make Organic Beauty Soap

Make organic soap in a variety of shapes and sizes using soap molds.

After looking at the long list of ingredients contained in most soaps, you may not want to make your own. However, some of the best beauty products consist of simple ingredients, and you can make your own organic soap in an afternoon. By making your own organic soap, you can choose the best organic ingredients, select your own scents, and know for certain that there are no damaging or dangerous chemicals in your soap. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Heat the 8 oz. of water in a pan and as it reaches a boil, slowly stir in the lye. Lye can sting the eyes, so keep the kitchen well ventilated while you work and wear goggles for protection. Turn off the heat and wait for the mix to reach room temperature.

2. Heat up the olive and palm oil in the second pan -- do not let them boil. Add 20 to 60 drops total of essential oils. Essential oils for beauty include lavender for dry and irritated skin, rose for rosacea and other skin conditions, tea tree oil for acne, chamomile for sensitive skin, and ylang ylang for mature skin. For your first batch of soaps, use no more than three total essential oils so the soap will still have a gentle and balanced smell.

3. Stir the oils into the cooled lye and water mixture. Stir by hand every few minutes for an hour, or put it in a blender on low until it thickens and becomes opaque.

4. Pour the soap into a soap mold, or several small ones, and let it sit for 24 hours before use.
