Travel Risk For Army Trips

Travel awareness is a key component in reducing personal risk for military service members.

Frequent travel in and outside of the continental United States is a fact of life for military personnel. The use of situational awareness can reduce personal hazards when engaged in any trip-related activity. Regardless of destination or mode of transport, diligent preparation and an effective personal safety plan are needed to counter risks and ensure a safe trip for any traveling service member.

Do not wear a military uniform

Wear civilian clothes when traveling to and from your destination. An individual dressed in a military uniform may be seen as a potential target by political groups, criminals, and opportunists. Long wait lines and the lack of familiarity with the surroundings can lead to exposure to potential risk. Whether you are traveling by ground, sea, or air, avoid traveling in uniform.

Safeguard identifying documents

Safeguard your passport, military identification card, driver's license, military orders or any other document that may contain your personal data. These documents can be illegally used to gain entry to military facilities. Use protective carrying devices like briefcases and lanyards that conceal your personal items.

Research the internal political climate of the areas on your travel itenerary.

Visit the Department of State website to research potential travel-related hazards for your trip. The Department of State frequently issues both civilian and military travel advisories for U.S. citizens. You may also want to contact the in-country embassy for information on the political situation in any area you may visit.

Plan routes, modes of transportation, and meeting sites thoroughly

Purchase transportation tickets and passes in advance. You may also want to choose the routes you plan to use to travel to and from events. You can designate meeting places beforehand to avoid discussing personal matters in public. Be sure to choose reputable transportation services and avoid walking or waiting for rides in poorly lit areas after dark.

Travel in pairs

Avoid traveling to and from events alone when operating abroad. If trips alone are unavoidable, make a fellow service member or friend aware of your schedule. Keep you cellphone handy in case of emergency.
