Choose Saddlebags For Your Motorcycle

Saddlebags need to fit correctly on a motorcycle for your safety.

There are two main styles of saddlebags for motorcycles. Side-mount saddlebags are usually leather or hard bags that do not interfere with a passenger on the rear of your motorcycle. Top-mount saddlebags occupy the space of a passenger on the rear of your seat. If you often have a passenger with you when you ride, you will have to remove top-mount saddlebags and may prefer the side-mount style. Measuring your motorcycle is the first step in bag fitting. After you acquire the measurements, you can choose from a large variety of styles and sizes.

Instructions

Measuring

1. Place the tip of a measuring tape on the rear of the driver's seat where it starts to rise on one side of your motorcycle. Stretch the measuring tape back along the length of the turn signal arm to the lamp holder. Note this measurement as your horizontal length.

2. Measure the distance from the bottom of the passenger seat down to the tailpipe. Subtract one inch from this measurement, and note it as your vertical height.

3. Choose a nylon top-mount or leather side-mount saddlebag that is the same size as these two measurements or smaller.

Features

4. Choose a removable saddlebag with a mounting system that remains attached to your motorcycle if you carry your gear inside with you. This allows you to unclip the front and back straps that hold the saddlebag on and remove the bag quickly while leaving the mounting system intact. Side-mount bags mount permanently to your bike.

5. Select nylon bags treated with polyurethane to resist water and keep your items dry in a rain shower.

6. Purchase a top-mount saddlebag with a large top opening to have easy access to everything in the bag. Choose a saddlebag with smaller side openings to provide several smaller compartments for you to separate gear for easy access. Side-mount bags open from the top only.
