Crochet A Laptop Bag

Creating a laptop bag on your own allows you to personalize your bag to fit your personality, along with fitting it to your specific needs.

Instructions

The Supplies

1. Choose a yarn that fits where you will be bringing your laptop. If you are making the bag for business use, then something bright pink and furry will not be a good option. Choose something that is sturdy enough to hold the weight of a laptop.

2. Choose a hook that fits the yarn you choose. The ball band on the yarn will give a suggested hook size. You should use a hook one size smaller than suggested, because a tighter fabric will be sturdier. However, this can vary depending on how tight you crochet.

3. Choose a lining fabric that will not scratch the computer. You should choose a color or pattern that goes well with the yarn color. Any thin, smooth fabric should be fine.

The Pattern

4. For this bag, a simple but tight stitch will be used. The tight stitch makes the fabric sturdier, so there is less chance of the bag being unable to support the weight of the computer.

5. Chain about 30 stitches. Depending on the width of your computer, you may need to chain more or less.

6. Single crochet in each chain across. Chain one and turn at the end of the row, then single crochet in each stitch across. Repeat until the bag is twice as long as your computer. Finish off.

7. Fold the newly crocheted fabric in half and single crochet each side shut. Using single crochet to seam the edges makes the seam stronger than simply sewing it.

8. Make two straps. Chain as many stitches as necessary to make the straps the length you desire. Single crochet in each stitch across, then chain one, turn, and repeat. Crocheting the straps lengthwise reduces the stretch, as crochet stitches stretch more vertically than horizontally. Attach the straps to the bag using single crochet.

Lining the Bag

9. Fold the lining fabric in half and lay it flat on the table. Lay the bag on top of the fabric and trace around the bag onto the fabric.

10. Pin the two sides of the fabric together around the tracing, allowing about 1/2 inch for the seam.

11. Sew the fabric together along the traced lines, leaving one side open.

12. Insert the fabric lining into the bag so that the seams of the lining are unseen. Fold the top edge of the lining down between the bag and the lining and pin in place. Sew around the edge to secure the lining in place.
