A saxophone needs a case for storage and transport.
Saxophonists keep their instruments in special cases that protect them during transport. Saxophones are vulnerable to damage because of the large number of delicately balanced keys and levers the instrument uses. Traditional cases are sturdy but heavy, and some musicians prefer lighter or more flexible variations for different uses.
Hard
The traditional saxophone case resembles a long briefcase. It is rectangular with a single handle and sides made of plywood covered in leather or a nylon coating. Some styles have a plastic exterior shell with rounded edges. Such a case usually has two metal clasps to hold it closed. Inside is a block of hard foam wrapped in fabric, with space cut out where the saxophone body and neck rest. There is also a compartment for reeds, mouthpieces and accessories.
Soft
A soft saxophone case resembles a hard case but with a vinyl or nylon fabric exterior rather than a plastic or wooden shell. The softer material is lighter, making the case easier to carry. The soft exterior is less likely to show scratches and offers a small amount of additional protection. Soft cases often have a pouch on the exterior for holding music or other papers and use zippers and Velcro to stay closed.
Gig Bags
A gig bag is a soft case intended for short-term use between performances. The typical gig bag is smaller than a traditional soft case and made of nylon or rayon fabric with zippers and Velcro closures. It contains less sturdy padding, making it more lightweight. Its shape resembles a saxophone body, and it often has a shoulder strap for easy carrying. It has an exterior pouch, like soft cases.
Custom
Some musicians require customized cases, either to carry multiple saxophones or for specialized instruments that will not fit in a standard case. A saxophonist can order a customized case in any size or color, while a standard saxophone case is typically brown or black. Some musicians also use an exterior bag to hold their saxophone case, providing an extra layer of protection from bumps and scratches.
