Lufthansa passengers must meet the airline's baggage requirements.
Lufthansa airline, like most airlines, has specific requirements regarding baggage requirements for its travelers. Lufthansa offers free carry-on and checked luggage options for bags that meet size and weight restrictions, and offers travelers the opportunity to pay a surcharge for certain oversize or overweight bags. In addition, all passengers traveling out of the United States must be sure to meet all of the Transportation Security Administration's baggage requirements before luggage will be permitted on the plane.
Carry-on Requirements
Lufthansa allows passengers traveling in economy class one piece of carry-on luggage. While some Lufthansa flights allow business and first-class passengers two pieces of carry-on luggage, passengers on flights to or from the United States must check their second piece of luggage. All carry-on bags must be 55 by 40 by 20 centimeters and weigh under 8 kilograms, or 17.6 pounds. In addition to one piece of carry-on luggage, the Lufthansa website notes that passengers may carry items such as a small handbag, jacket, blanket, camera, binoculars and reading material aboard the flight and travelers needing crutches, orthopedic devices and infant seats are encouraged to bring these items as needed.
Free Baggage
Lufthansa's free checked baggage requirements vary depending on the countries of departure and arrival. Economy class passengers on flights to and from the United States to Europe, India and Yekaterinburg are allowed one piece of checked baggage, weighing 23 kilograms, or 50.7 pounds, while business and first-class travelers are permitted two pieces of checked luggage, with each piece weighing up to 32 kilograms or 70.5 pounds. Passengers on flights between the United States and all other destinations are allowed the same baggage allotment, though economy passengers may bring a second bag, weighing no more than 23 kilograms. All checked baggage of flights to or from the United States must have a linear measurement of the length, height and width that is no more than 158 centimeters.
Extra Baggage
Passengers with baggage that is too heavy or too large to meet Lufthansa's baggage requirements are often able to pay an extra fee to have their checked baggage placed on the plane. The fees range from $50 to $900 as of October 2010 and vary depending on the number of bags, individual bag weight, bag size and passenger class. Lufthansa provides a pricing chart for customers on its website, detailing the many different options available for passengers with excessive baggage.
Other Considerations
Children, ages 2 and over, on Lufthansa flights must meet the same baggage requirements as adults, according to the Lufthansa website. Children under the age of 2 who do not have their own seat may check one piece of luggage weighing under 23 kilograms on flights to and from the United States. Young children are allowed to travel with a fully collapsible stroller. Children's travel safety seats may be carried aboard the plane free of charge for children who have a booked seat.
